Our History
Owner, Brian Kashima’s, understanding of landscaping started at a very early age as he assisted his father who was a landscaper by trade. However, his career soared when he worked for Vandergeest Landscape, providing landscaping services for various companies in Mission Viejo and Irvine, California. He then went on to Sun Land Construction, managing projects for Denny’s, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, and several municipalities. In 1986, he started his own company, Kashima Landscape, primarily focused on upscale, luxury residences. The company quickly grew, requiring a California contractor’s license (which was obtained 1992) to more fully serve its various clients, including: municipal projects, hotels, and commercial/industrial buildings.
By 1994, Kashima Landscape incorporated, becoming KLS West, Inc. Crews were acquired to manage a full-service landscape construction company offering landscape maintenance, concrete services, foundation walls, waterfalls, outdoor kitchens, irrigation systems, landscape planting, and specimen tree and palm planting. An interest in Oregon brought him to sell the business in 2001 (although he still maintains a license in California) and he moved there to begin another company.
Fall River Farms, a wholesale nursery was established and run in Bend, Oregon, from 2001-2005. The company provided contract growing services, with an emphasis in xeriscape plant material for developers, nurseries, and landscapers throughout Oregon.
Looking for a new challenge, he decided to help a landscape maintenance company start-up in Sunriver, Oregon in 2006 by serving in a consulting and mentoring role. He provided daily consultation, did the company’s design work, created project bids, assisted with outside sales, managed customer relations, trained employees, and oversaw concrete, paver, irrigation systems, planting, and lighting installations. Brian was integrally involved with the company on a daily basis until choosing to move home to Hawaii (where both of his parents are from and chose to retire) in August, 2007.
He now has established Island Landscape, a licensed and insured landscape contracting company working throughout Hawaii, to build on his lifetime of experience in landscaping.
Island Landscape has an efficient, well managed team that specializes in landscape design, landscaping, plant brokerage and supply, farm plans, water features, masonry, and irrigation and drainage systems. The company performs its services with a high level of integrity, communication, proactive approach and expertise to ensure that the job gets done right the first time. We look forward to serving you.
